Abstract

This article focuses on one of the challenges facing upper secondary education when it was declared mandatory in 2012. First of all, it substantiates the importance for young people to stay in this type of education and highlights the role that teachers play in this regard, particularly during the first year of high school. It then presents important indicators such as coverage and dropout rates, which allow us to appreciate the magnitude of the phenomenon. It briefly describes the public policy strategies that have been proposed to face this challenge, highlighting the guidelines to improve permanence. Finally, it concludes with a reflection on the characteristics of the educational model and the teacher that contribute to counteract school dropout.
