Abstract

Excessive mucoid discharge and infectious conditions are common complaints among patients wearing ocular prostheses following the loss of the ocular globe. The purpose of this study is to identify microorganisms present in the anophthalmic sockets of individuals with artificial eyes.

Ocular secretion samples were collected from 17 men and 5 women between the ages of 13 and 80 to perform microbiological cultures and determine the presence and diversity of bacteria. Identification of genus and species was performed using the VITEK2 automated system. After the incubation period, 60% of the samples tested positive for bacterial presence, with Staphylococcus epidermidis (26.67%) being the most frequently detected. The highest proportion of positive results was found in patients wearing ocular prostheses that were in poor condition or had been in use for more than 7 years.
